Buckthorn is a highly invasive shrub that crowds out native plants. Nearly everyone has it in the yards, and many residents do not know what it looks like and the damage this shrub/tree is doing to the Forest Preserves and native flora and fauna.
Learn how to identify buckthorn, find out why it threatens wildlife habitat, and learn how to control it in your yard. We'll also hear how Northbrook supports residents in eradicating buckthorn.

"Soft landings" are permanent plantings under tree canopies to help moths and butterfly caterpillars to survive. Landscaping with native trees that host many insects as larvae is critically important to their survival. Moths, butterflies, and other insects also need shelter throughout the year, including fallen leaves and natives planted under trees.

Carol Cichorski and her husband Mike discovered dahlias 20 years ago and their life has not been the same since. They plant tubers in the basement in February and grow hundreds of plants each year - some for their own garden. Carol will share her passion for these long-blooming beauties and will show how you can easily grow dahlias too.
